
Decorative Surfaces
Chroma Conservation provides a full range of conservation treatments including investigation of the previous decorative schemes, cleaning, consolidation and repair to various substrates and reintegration or reinstatement of missing decoration (including wall paintings).
We also have wide experience in replicating historic decorative finishes, including:
- Gilding
- Stencilling
- Graining
- Marbling
Gilding – conservation of original and re-gilding areas of loss
We undertake a wide range of gilding projects, from large interior schemes and exterior architectural features to, to a small decorative pieces.
The gilding, either oil or water, is carried out following the treatment of the surface of the object and always using traditional techniques and materials.
Stencilling – painted decoration applied through a cut out template to create a repeating pattern
Graining – a wood finish, generally used for inferior woods to create the impression of finer woods
Marbling – painted imitation of the colour, sheen and veining of marble
