The Great Hall was designed by architect Edward Godwin. In January 2019 Chroma Conservation carried out the conservation of the frieze that runs around on all the lower level of the hall. This is one of the original features of the hall, the frieze words are from psalm 115 “Non Nobis Domine”, the tag used by Edward Godwin to sign his architectural plans.
The frieze was gently cleaned, consolidated and retouched.
On the higher level of the hall, the stone arches have been limewashed and decorated at a later date following the original colour scheme of the rest of the hall.
Chroma Conservation was asked to carry out a conservation trial on one of the arches.
The trial was done on one of the most affected areas, were water penetration from a window above occurred and salted efflorescence appeared.
After establishing that the salts were no longer active, the stone was gently brushed, the water stains were cleaned and retouches were carried out on paint losses.
